Everybody has those ‘blank spaces’ in their homes which they wish they could make more interesting, to help the design of the room. In art and design this is called negative space. Although the name comes across as rather a pessimistic term, negative space is not always a bad thing,as some kind of blank space is needed in every room to ensure it is not overly designed and cluttered, feeling like the walls will close in on you.
The trick with negative space is to think acutely about where and how you will place your furniture and why. There is a difference between a plain space in your house that looks like its meant to be and one that looks like you forgot something. If you are going to leave a part of a room blank, have a reason for it so that persons can recognize your rightful design intentions.
Try to look for negative space opportunities that will ensure the room’s design balance. Train yourself to look for things like, is the table with the fledgling vignette look better if it was cleared off? Look for spots that seem like they would look more sophisticated and simple if some kind of element was removed.
However remember that if after a few days the negative space hasn’t freshened the atmosphere of the room, rather just looking empty then fill it with something. It may not be the right area to leave intentionally plain.
