With the NSW government ready to fund 10 projects worth $15 million to boost rail efficiency, the freight transportation is also in for uplift.
Freight minister Duncan Gay with Cootamundra MP Katrina Hodgkinson announced six projects in Young where $5m will be invested to reopen the 56 kilometer Maimuru to Demondrille section of the Cowra Line. The other projects announced are $3m siding extension at Hillston for grain receivals, $2m to rebuild a 2.8 kilometre section of the Moree to Inverell rail line, $1.5m Barellan rail siding extension for grain receivals, $1.5m to extend Burren Junction’s rail siding for grain receivals and $1m to upgrade Canberra freight terminal at Fyshwick.
Project funding is on top of NSW government’s previous commitment of $400m to the new Fixing Rail program that is backed by anticipated profits of $20 billion from the sale of state’s electricity assets. Besides, $1m would be further spent on planning and budget the remaining four projects. These include authorizing rail line from West Tamworth to Westdale, new turnouts at Unanderra and Shellharbour’s Dunmore rail loop and a new crossing loop near Tarago.
According to Mr. Gay, “The NSW government is determined to shift more bulk freight on to railway lines to ensure we get produce from paddocks to ports as quickly and efficiently as possible”.
As the state is carrying more freight on both road and rail it is required to get trucks off the road and get the freight onto efficient rail lines. Also, according to government figures the freight task is bound to double by 2031 hitting up 794 million tonnes.
As the country rails with their low-capacity freight lines create a hindrance for farmers, Mr. Gay further added, “The freight transport network is the backbone of country NSW and we need to improve its efficiency to take more freight off our local and regional”.
